Far2 is an isozyme of fatty acyl-CoA reductase (FAR), which synthesizes aliphatic alcohols from acyl-CoA. Far2 is highly expressed in the meibomian glands and is involved in the production of wax esters, the major lipid component of the tear film. Far2 knockout mice exhibit dry eye symptoms such as meibomian gland blockage, tear film instability and corneal damage.
