Strain description

This strain is a C57BL/6-derived spontaneous mutant mouse model, in which chronic diarrhea continues even if Sodium Dextran Sulfate (DSS) is stopped after diarrhea induction by DSS, indicating that the strain can be used as a mouse model of Crohn's disease, one of the incurable diseases.

Mice of the strain are called "light-color red-eye mice" or pink mice because they have color reductions in coats and eyes (i.e., light-brown coats and pink eyes, respectively). These color reductions are due to a point mutation in the Hps5 gene involved in Hermansky-Padlak syndrome (an incurable disease specified by the Japanese government, #164).
