Strain description

The mice are knockout mice of surfactant-associated protein a1 (SFTPA1), a lung surfactant protein. It was created by deleting the entire coding region of the Sftpa1 gene by setting guide RNAs in the 5'-UTR and 3'-UTR by genome editing. SFTPA1 functions as a surfactant that relaxes surface tension in the alveoli and is responsible for innate immunity in the alveoli. Mutations in SFTPA1 cause pulmonary fibrosis (e.g., Takezaki et al., 2019), and this mouse strain would be useful as a model for idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis.
