Strain description

The toxicity of dioxins and related compounds is mediated mainly by aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR) signaling. A binding motif of AhR, the AhR-responsive element III (AHRE-III), is located upstream from the gene encoding tyrosine hydroxylase (TH), the rate limiting enzyme of dopamine biosynthesis. The transgenic mice, Th-Luc, were produced with inserted constructs of the AHRE-III enhancers, TH gene promoter and the c-myc-tagged luciferase gene (The constructs are shown in a figure bellow). Using these mice, the effect of exposure of AhR activating agents (e.g., dioxins, PCBs, and benzpyrene) can be examined on midbrain dopaminergic neurons.

Three sublines (176,177 and 183 strains) are available (different in the transgene copy numbers). TH-Luc 176 strain was used in the literature.
